The tables were set and the cards were shuffled as well over 100 participants prepared their game faces for the Punch Poker
Texas Hold'em Tournament. Upon registering, each player received a bag of beautiful handmades from General Cigar, makers of
Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, Macanudo, La Gloria Cubana, and many more. The contents of the bag alone was worth well over the
price of admission...so, everybody came out on top even if they didn't make it to the final table! Also given to each
attendee was a deck of Punch poker cards, a commemorative pin, and a cigar cutter.
After a short introduction, the Texas Hold'em Tournament began. Each table accommodated 7 players and a professional dealer
donning a bow tie, each of whom exhibited years of experience with their card shuffling skills. Each table was monitored
throughout the event to ensure 'fairness'. I must say, the dealers and moderators appeared to be having as much fun as the
participants, if not more!
For almost 4 hours, the grand ballroom of the Split Rock Resort was filled with fast-paced, high-risk action in a World Series
of Poker-esque environment. The overall feel was genuine and friendly, but man, these players intense! Every 15 minutes the
blinds increased, causing the players to make some dicey moves in order to survive. As each player was eliminated, the tension
grew, as well as the crowd of onlookers. Finally, the group was whittled down to one final table, the money table. Spectators
crowded around to watch as 6 surviving players tested their odds for the grand prize of $4,000 cash. The minimum pay-out was
$100, still a nice prize after a fun-filled event.
Although the stakes were high, players still maintained the true meaning behind this event - to enjoy a great smoke with great
company. Participants engaged in friendly conversation and laughed together as the last of their chips were expunged. During
the event, players were more than happy to break away from the action for a quick stop at the bar, complete with top shelf
liquors and refreshing beer.
No doubt about it, the Punch Poker Tournament was a wonderful event and helped set the mood for the rest of the weekend. We'd
like to extend a warm, heart-felt thank you to each of the players for participating. We hope you had a great time!
